Our highly skilled and experienced Radiation oncologists in Chennai rely on the latest imaging and precise technology to ensure every treatment is both safe and effective for you.

Understanding Radiation Oncology: How It Works

Radiation oncology uses high-energy beams to destroy cancer cells while sparing healthy tissues as much as possible.

Targeting the Cancer Cells :

Radiation oncologists meticulously map out the tumor location using imaging techniques like CT scans or MRIs. This ensures precise targeting of the radiation beams.

Delivering the Dose :

During treatment, a machine called a linear accelerator directs high-energy radiation beams toward the targeted area. Think of it as a powerful laser focusing its energy on a specific point.

Disrupting the Enemy :

Radiation disrupts the DNA of cancer cells, hindering their ability to grow and divide. Healthy cells are also affected, but to a lesser extent, and they have a greater capacity to repair themselves.

Treatment Regimen :

Radiation therapy is often delivered in a series of outpatient sessions over several weeks. The specific number of sessions and dosage depend on the type and stage of cancer being treated.

What our patient says

FAQs

1. Is radiation therapy painful?
No, radiation therapy is not painful. You may feel like you are having an X-ray taken. Some patients notice mild side effects like tiredness or skin changes, but these usually fade after treatment.
2. How long does a radiation therapy session take?
Each session usually lasts about 15–30 minutes, though most of that time is spent positioning you carefully. The actual delivery of radiation takes only a few minutes.
3. Will radiation therapy harm my healthy cells?
Our advanced imaging and precision technology allow us to target cancer cells while protecting healthy tissues as much as possible. Healthy cells may be affected slightly but usually heal faster than cancer cells.
4. Will I need to stay in the hospital during cancer treatment?
It depends on the type of treatment you receive. Radiation therapy is usually done on an outpatient basis, so most patients go home the same day after each session. For surgery, you will need to stay in the hospital for a few days, and the length of stay depends on the type of procedure and your recovery needs. Our team will guide you through what to expect in advance.
5. Can I continue my daily activities during radiation treatment?
Many patients continue their daily routines. You may feel tired at times, so listening to your body and resting as needed is important. Your oncologist will guide you on activities to avoid based on your treatment plan.
